Day 1: USA-San Jose, Costa Rica
We arrive in San Jose where we are met by our local Tour Director. We drive to the hotel and have a short orientation meeting before dinner. (D)
Day 2: San Jose-La Fortuna
After breakfast we drive to the Sarapiqui area for an exciting white water rafting experience down the Sarapaqui River. Along the river we may see birds and other animals. We then drive to the Arenal Volcano National Park and stop in the town of Fortuna to meet locals and shop. We spend the night at a lodge with a view of the volcano (one of the world’s most active) to watch the eruptions. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Arenal Volcano-Sarapiqui
In the morning we hike to La Fortuna Waterfalls for a natural pool swim. We visit Juan’s farm to learn about ecological innovation in farming. In the afternoon we hike through a forest and then climb part way up the volcanic slope for a beautiful view of Lake Arenal. We then visit the thermal hot springs (weather permitting) to relax and rejuvenate! (B, L, D)
Day 4: Monteverde-Abangaritos
We depart for the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve by boat, across Lake Arenal. We take a canopy tour on the zip-line above the treetops, discovering more wildlife, habitats, and plants. We then drive to Abangaritos and overnight at the Ensendada Lodge on a private reserve. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Private Nature Refuge
Today is full of adventure! We start the day with a morning hike through a private nature refuge, followed by a boat tour through the mangrove swamp. We visit a local school to meet students and learn more about the Costa Rican culture. In the afternoon we take in spectacular scenery by horseback. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Quepos
We travel to the area near Manuel Antonio National Park, with its unusual combination of white sand beach and evergreen forest. We go on a safari on the Tarcoles River to view one of the largest colonies of crocodiles in Costa Rica. (B, L, D)
Day 7: Manuel Antonio National Park
A day at the beach! We visit Manuel Antonio National Park to see the monkeys and other wildlife. Relax, swim, snorkel, explore the jungle-surrounded coastline, or do an optional activity. In the afternoon we walk to the nearby town to meet the locals and shop. (B, L, D)
Day 8: Manual Antonio – Sarchi Town
In the morning we depart for San Jose driving through rural coffee-growing communities and small towns. We’ll stop in Sarchi, known for the handicrafts of local artisans. We enjoy our farewell dinner at the hotel in San Jose. (B, L, D)
Day 9: San-Jose – Depart
We transfer to the airport for our flights home. (B)
