North Carolina: The Tar Heel State

Capital: Raleigh

Recommended cities:  Charleston, Charlotte

The Tar Heel State; the origin is clothed in mystery, but it probably evolved from the fact that during the Colonial period, the colony's chief exports were tar, pitch and turpentine.

Did you know that North Carolina is named in honor of King Charles I of England, from the Latin "Carolus".

The Appalachian mountain chain runs through the western part of the state, forming the lush landscape of the region. The Great Smoky Mountains in southwestern  Mount Mitchell is the highest peak in the state, and at 6,684 feet, it is also the tallest mountain in the eastern United States.

A little bit of history North Carolina played its part in the Civil War - from coastal forts, America's first amphibious assault, the war's last major battle and its last major surrender.
