Biosphere 2

Biosphere 2 is a 3.15-acre structure originally built to be a man-made, materially-closed ecological system in Oracle, Arizona. It was used to explore the complex web of interactions within life systems in a structure that included five areas based on natural biomes and an agricultural area and human living/working space to study the interactions between humans, farming and technology with the rest of nature.

Today, visiting student groups can step into this controlled mini-world and see where the "biospherians" lived, the farm area where they grew their crops and the kitchen where they cooked their food. They can also go through an air lock door to the wilderness areas and experience first hand the tropical savanna, the 1 million gallon ocean and the coastal fog desert. Finally, they can see the techno-sphere where all the mechanical systems make it possible to control Biosphere 2.

“Outside The Glass” is a self-guided tour of the exterior of Biosphere 2, including the human habitat, climate change exhibit, and ocean viewing gallery.
